Last year I wrapped 25 picture books and numbered them 1-25, a picture book Advent. The books chosen were mostly Christmas books and were fun to read with Theodore as we moved through Advent.

This year I’ve not wrapped the books, but I think I’ll put one under the tree each day for us to read together as a family, that is, once the tree is up.

This time three years ago we were expecting a new baby, and this year we’re in a similar space, although this time round it’s not due until February…

And it’s with that in mind that Advent Picture Book #1 is Baby Glue by Tarryn Lean & Annie White.

“Hi, my name is Charlotte.
I am so excited. I am having a baby…
well, not exactly. I’m only six so I can’t
have my own baby.

But I am a part of a family and a
community and we are all having a baby.”

This is a book we were given three copies of as we waited for Theodore. Its a great story that explores how a community prepares for the birth of a baby. This Christmas we’re doing this both literally and liturgically.

“And I am waiting,
waiting
waiting for the baby.”

So, this Advent, how does your family, your community prepare for the birth of a baby?

Do they read to the baby?
do they sing to the baby?
Do they knit to the baby?
Do they make things for the baby?
Do they gather things for the baby?

“A baby is wonderful like that. Even though
they’re tiny & squishy, squirmy & can’t
really do anything for themselves, they can
bring together a family and a community,
like special glue…
like baby glue”
